Materials:

plywood
three (or more) wastebaskets, sized to fit side by side in closet with about two inches around each one
screws
paint (optional)

1. Measure the width of the closet and the length (front to back) of the wastebaskets. Cut a piece of plywood to the width of the closet by the length of the wastebasket plus 4 inches.

2. Turn one wastebasket upside down on the plywood and center it. Position the other two wastebaskets evenly between the center basket and the ends of the plywood.

3. Trace around the top of each wastebasket, then draw another line 1/2 inch inside it to create lips on which the wastebaskets will rest. (Note: If you expect to put heavy items, such as newspapers, into the wastebaskets, you may want to create handhold cutouts on the sides of the wastebasket holes.)

4. Use a jigsaw to cut out along the inner lines. Sand the edges of each cutout. If you want to, you can paint the plywood platform.

5. Locate and mark the studs in the closet wall. Cut two plywood cleats to the same length as the ends of the platform. You may want to paint them to match it, too.

6. Drill pilot holes in the cleats to correspond with the locations of the studs. Screw the cleats to the studs.

7. Lay the platform onto the cleats, and screw it in place. Drop the wastebaskets into the holes in the platform.
